So, I’ve never been Black Friday Shopping. Seriously! I came quite close to doing so several times in the past. When I was living at home, or maybe I was in college but home for Thanksgiving, my sister invited me to go Black Friday shopping with her. I agreed to go, but after going to bed so late the night before, I could not wake up in time to go. I actually thought she had not gone, but she told me that she had gone without me because she couldn’t rouse me from my awesome slumber.
Another time we came close to shopping on Black Friday was a few years ago. We had spent Thanksgiving with my family, but since they normally eat early and then head to the stores, we were faced with the choice of either staying at my aunt’s house or going home. We decided that we wanted to go see what the craziness was all about so we drove to Walmart. When we arrived in the store, we saw a cell phone that was from our provider. They had a special on the phones for Black Friday. This Walmart didn’t have the phone, so we went home. The next day (Friday), we went to a different Walmart and we were able to get the phones.
The next and last time we almost went Black Friday shopping was last year. It was the same routine of having Thanksgiving dinner with our family and then everyone leaving to go Black Friday shopping. We went home and then decided that we wanted to go drive around and see what people were doing. We went to Walmart and bought some running sneakers. The next stop was Target. We didn’t necessarily need another TV, but they still had a TV for a really great price, so we bought one. In our defense, we didn’t schedule a Black Friday shopping trip. We went to the stores just to get out the house.
In a post that I recently wrote, I I told you about how we spent our Thanksgiving. You can read about it here. This year, we didn’t even go to any stores at all. On Thanksgiving Day, I sat on my sofa with my laptop and did my own rendition of Black Friday shopping. My hubby and I had discussed buying an iPad to sync with our MacBook, so I went on Walmart’s website and ordered the iPad. I could honestly say that this is the closest that we have ever come to Black Friday shopping.
Our philosophy on Black Friday shopping is that it should be done away with. We would rather spend the entire Thanksgiving Day with our family and not feel the pressure to quickly eat dinner and then rush out to buy a bunch of items we don’t need. My hubby and I are not impulsive shoppers. I can be a very emotional shopper, but I’m not impulsive. If we walk into a store and we see really great deal on something, there are times when we will decide to get the item. On a normal basis however, we like to comparison shop and really contemplate before we make many purchases.
When we woke up on Friday morning, we just hung around the house for quite some time. I drank coffee in front of the fireplace and we just enjoyed ourselves. After a few hours, we went and picked out our Christmas tree. We always get our Christmas tree after Thanksgiving. We always decorate for Christmas after Thanksgiving. That’s another thing that we like to hold as a tradition. We like to celebrate one holiday at a time. We’ve never had Christmas and Thanksgiving decorations up at the same time. After coming from my aunt’s house the night before, I did swap out some of our Christmas decorations, but technically Thanksgiving was over.
We always get a live tree. My parents used to have an artificial tree when we were really young kids, but as we got a little bit older they started only buying real trees. Milton and I have never bought an artificial tree, and even though I am somewhat allergic to the tree in the for the first few days, I don’t think we would have it any other way. We love the smell, look, and feel of a live Christmas tree.
How did you spend your Black Friday? I’d love to hear about it. Also, please don’t forget to check my Instagram page @thegirlfromnyc to see a giveaway coming up tonight and several more that are coming up this month.
Have a great night and thanks for reading!
P.S. I seriously have a thing for cute mugs and socks! The pics from above were taken on the same day. Two different cups of coffee and two different pairs of funky socks.
